Walter T. Higgs Continued... (Southwest Blues All CD's should have to be this good! Higgs is a gifted player and his unique sound has some great haunting to it from sources both east and west of the Mississippi. He is the real thing and makes it obvious in most fthe tracks here. It's a great buch of elements he throws into the gumbo and when it boils,it boils red hot. He's got a pocketful of funk,a heaping portion of Chicago,a pinch of down home and about a ton and a half of Texas blowing out of the harp. He is helped in great measure by guitarist Derek O'Brien,producer/keyboardist Riley Osbourne, drummer George Rains, bassist Larry Fulcher.Johnny Moeller is playing guitar in there too,as well has a horn section made up of Mark Kazanov,Les Izmore and Jimmy Shortell ! So aided and abetted by these powerhouse players,The Prince of Port Arthur harps and wails his way through a bevy of terrific songs and great compositions. It's amazing stuff to be sure. Check out the hilarious tune "Too Many Women Knockin'." It's a situation most of us handsome hunks have to live with every day of our wretched lives! One of my favorite tracks is "Blues and Gospel." It's a great catchy hard driving shuffle with some wonderful little harp moments.Higgs has this wondeful raspy quality to his vocals and they are perfectly suited to the mood of his tunes. At times he has kind of a,no,I can't say it,I just can't say it,okay I'll say it...a Stevie Ray thing happening in his voice.Check out "Kiss Your Shoes" before you roll your eyes at me.See? For my money, this is an outstanding little CD and well worth a listen or three.
