Walter T. Higgs

"An excellent, economical harmonica player and expressive vocalist."
Tom Hyslop - BLUES REVUE

Blues cult hero WALTER T. HIGGS, in front of what BLUES REVUE quite correctly termed "an outrageously talented band" featuring Austin all-stars such as guitarist Derek O'Brien, sax star Mark "Kaz" Kazanoff, guitarist Johnny Moeller and keyboardist/producer Riley Osbourn, rips it up from first note to last, combining hard-blowing harp heroics with honest, heartfelt vocals.

"Another excellent example of why the Austin blues scene is so famous. Higgs' harmonica work is amazing and the band of Austin blues all-stars behind him is worth the CD price itself."

Good time Texas Blues is still alive and well in Austin, Texas, "The Live Music Capital Of The World". Known as one of the Lone Star State's best harp blowers and a longstanding stalwart of the Austin Blues scene, Walter T. Higgs is a prime perpetuator of the "Austin Sound". Higgs' fad-resistant sound, played with enormous conviction and great style, stands tall in an era of watered down rock imitators of "real" blues. True to the blues tradition yet open to innovation, Higgs' joyful romps on "Just A Few Miles To Go" pay homage to vintage styles while simultaneously recasting them into his personal fashion.

More Reviews:

"The first release from Texan Walter T. Higgs on the artist-oriented DOC BLUES RECORDS label, displays Walter's dedication to the Windy City harp masters, mixed with some driving Texas shuffle. Backed by some of Austin's finest talent including, Derek O'Brien on guitar, "Just A Few Miles To Go" is a CD of original material, which easily moves from deep down blues, to good natured fun such as on the song "Too Many Women Knockin". Walter distills a lifetime of blues influences and delivers a sound distinctly his own." Smokin' Joe, Joe's Roadhouse, KPFT-FM Houston www.kpft.org

"Dr. Jim Thompson, the man behind the recently established Doc Blues in Austin, Texas, couldn't have hoped for a better kick-off than what he has achieved with this release. He linked this talented harmonica-player up against the very elite of musicians around Antone's blues Club. And the result becomes a record which in many ways mixes the variety of genres one finds in the area surrounding Port Arthur, Texas - Walter Higgs' home town. Out where Louisiana meets Texas. On this very first of Doc Blues' releases, Just A Few Miles, we're offered the great harp of Walter T. Higgs - and a splendid team of musicians from Austin. Blues veterans such as the guitarist Derek O' Brian, the producer and piano player Riley Osborne, and a rhythm section with George Raines (drums) and Larry Fulcher (bass). In addition several very capable musicians playing guitars, percussion and various horns. People like Mark Kazanov, to name just one. You can't recall having heard the name Walter T. Higgs before? Well, as mentioned, he hails from the town of Port Arthur, the city that bred talents such as Janis Joplin and Johnny Winter, but he has lived and been a driving force on the Austin scene for some time. He had his first years at AntoneÍs, later he was in charge of the jam at 6th Street. Where back-to basic is the clue-word. OK-even if you haven't heard his name before, it doesn't matter-during the 12 self-written songs this album consists of, you'll have plenty of time to get to know both the band and this fantastic harp player. Yes, this is my recomendation; get a hold of this album, the earlier the better."
